My Background

Lifelong lover of piano  ~  Playing for 30+ years  ~  Piano Teaching for 15+ years  ~
Former Primary School Teacher  ~  Trinity College of Music Graduate  ~  Piano Scholarship winner  ~  100% Student Pass Rate in Music Exams

My love of piano began around age 6 when I had a keyboard for Christmas and started teaching myself Simon and Garfunkel songs. It wasn’t long before I started lessons and got an acoustic piano. I have now been playing for about 30 years.

I worked through the 8 piano grades with the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) by the time I was 17 and passed my Grade 5 theory with high distinction. At the age of 16, I won a piano scholarship to the Welsh College of Music and Drama for two years running. I also learnt the alto saxophone in my teens and enjoyed being principal saxophonist for the County Youth Wind Orchestra and the County Youth Jazz band.

I went on to complete a Performance degree in Music with Honours at Trinity College of Music, London (now called Trinity Laban College of Music and Dance) and got my BMus(Hons), specializing in classical piano. I am also a fully qualified Primary School Teacher after completing my PGCE in Primary School Teaching in London.

I have spent time class teaching in state, private and special needs schools in London, South Wales and Bristol. I have also been a visiting specialist music teacher in state and special needs primary schools in London leading the music lesson, choir and having a central role in preparing school concerts.  I have been teaching piano one to one privately for around 15 years and doing this full time in Bristol for the last 6 years. Teaching piano gives me immense joy and has become my main focus. I am passionate about offering a well-rounded and good quality musical experience to my students.

My teaching experience and training has helped me have a wide awareness of each individual’s different learning styles and I am passionate about incorporating this in my teaching so that each individual learns the best they can.

My piano teachers have had a great influence on me and my relationship with the piano. I experienced excellent, inspiring teachings which has helped my piano playing blossom and deepen. One of their biggest gift’s to me was their belief in me. My teachers have included Yonty Solomon (his teachers included the great Myra Hess and Charles Rosen), Penelope Roskell (author of ‘The Art of Piano Fingering’ and ‘Yoga for Musicians DVD’) and Sharon Richards (the accompanist of the Welsh National Opera at the time).

My nature is friendly, gentle, warm. I bring a sense of fun and enjoyment to learning the piano.

Piano is my main love. In addition to this, I also enjoy being in nature and walking. I have a passion for travel and am fascinated by other cultures. I have spent time in India, South East Asia, Mexico, Central America, North Africa, Australia and Europe. I also love to practice yoga, dance, I dabble with the guitar and read books – whether it is a novel, about piano playing, teaching or personal development. I have an ongoing interest in self enquiry, personal development and learning.
